February Evil Top Ten from BitDefender

Well, it’s easy to be a prophet when there are lots of people striving to make your predictions come true. The virus writers have strived to prove us right, and they did. There was, indeed, a flurry of activity on the virus front.

“Best new entry” goes to Netsky.B, which has managed to mass mail itself into the 2nd position of our monthly top ten and surpass Msblast.A. Of course, it chalked up most of its victims in the first few days after release, but it’s still going strong, despite the speed at which we reacted. BitDefender issued an alert to customers about this virus, warning of high spreading risk.

Another alert was issued this month, concerning Bagle.B, which, happily enough, did not make it into our top ten for the month, despite a very strong start. This is an unexpected development for those of us who follow the news media reports on viruses. The mass mailers grab the spotlight with high initial spreading rates, while other threats, like the trojans and backdoors that our monthly top is full of, slip unnoticed by the press. I suspect we haven’t seen the last of bagle yet, though.

Speaking of which, Msblast.A and “counter-virus” Welchia.B are numbers one and three in our chart. What that means is simply that people do not patch rapidly enough, as always.

So, without further ado, here’s the monthly Evil Top Ten from BitDefender.
