Netsky.D clouds the day

February 2004

New mass mailing engine makes virus more of a threat

Were there a net sky, it'd be pretty cloudy today. Netsky.D is in the wild and things aren't looking so good. BitDefender virus researchers have come across it in a routine check for new viruses, and found that it has a new, much improved, mass mailing engine, which makes it quite more of a threat.

"It's well over the C variant in terms of mailing engine effectiveness, although that won't make so much of a difference overall" said Adrian Gostin, BitDefender virus researcher.

The virus is probably the work of the same person who wrote Netsky.C, although it is functionally quite different. The author seems to have let go of the idea of spreading it through the filesharing networks, as the virus doesnt' copy itself into the folders commonly used by filesharing apps.

One thing that hasn't changed is the "music". Netsky.D is programmed to play random sounds into the PC speaker of infected machines on the 2-nd of May, between six and nine o' clock in the morning (local time).

BitDefender Labs have issued a free cleanup tool.
